Metropolis is one of the greatest exponents of the German Expressionist Cinema. This iconic silent film directed by Fritz Lang that takes place in a futuristic urban dystopia was premiered in 1927, a few years before sound cinema became a phenomenon. Metropolis was the first of very few films to be distinguished by UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme. This award appraises the vivid depiction of the society featured in the film and its profound human and social content, also recognizing Metropolis as an expressionism masterpiece, a pioneer in the development of science-fiction and special effects in the history of cinema.
