Permanent Choir

Teatro Colón's Permanent Choir was created in 1925. Its first season was conducted by Achille Consoli and César Stiattesi. The following year they were succeded by Rafael Terragnolo, who remained in the post for 25 years. Tullio Boni was conductor between 1951 and 1967, and Romano Gandolfi after 1968. Other important choir conductors were Carlos Berardi, Luis de Mallea, Valdo Sciammarella, Carlos Gandolfi, Andrés Máspero, Jorge Carciofolo, Alberto Balzanelli, Miguel Martínez, Vittorio Sicuri, Salvatore Caputo and Peter Burian. The current conductor is Miguel Fabián Martínez. In addition to its important part in the Colón's opera seasons, the Permanent Choir also participates in vocal-symphonic concerts and has performed, among many others, Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B minor, Ludwig Van Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Symphony No. 9, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Requiem, Johannes Brahms' A German Requiem, Hector Berlioz's Requiem, Zoltan Kodály's Psalmus Hungaricus, Igor Stravinski's Symphony of Psalms, Arnold Schönberg's Gurre-Lieder, and Benjamin Britten's War Requiem. In 1941, the Permanent Choir performed Verdi's Messa da Requiem and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 under the conduction of Arturo Toscanini, marking one of the choir's many milestones, which also includes Symphony No.9 conducted by Daniel Barenboim. The number of members of the choir has varied over the years, but it currently has more than a hundred singers. To become one of the permanent members of the Teatro Colon's Permanent Choir, they must demonstrate vocal and artistic excellence. Apart from being proficient in singing, they must be trained actors, since the directors are nowadays creating productions that are increasingly more visually and theatrically challenging.
